Roadside Attractions: 6-2-13

The cycling season is getting off to a sluggish start this year, at least for me. This is due in part to a busy schedule, and to the weather. Just over a month ago we had nearly a foot of snow.

It's also due in part to laziness.

But I'm getting back into it now, which brings me to the theme of this post: roadside attractions.

You see a lot of interesting stuff from the saddle of a bike, stuff you might miss from the comfort of an automobile. This little cage on the above-right is in the town of Superior, Colorado. (How on earth did the town fathers select that name?) It's an odd object for the public's viewing pleasure – a jail from yesteryear, for local wrongdoers awaiting trial or the noose, or for the town drunk to sleep it off. There used to be a sign nearby describing its history, but I couldn't find it on the recent day I took this picture.

A block away is this sad reminder of the sickening slaughter in Connecticut last December. It hangs on a fence in front of someone's house, without comment.

These are a couple of the roadside attractions near my humble abode. I've written about similar roadside attractions in the past – more than once, in fact – and will continue to do so in the months ahead. (One of my favorites is this one.
